Carnival Glass Tumblers Gallery: India

Considerable thanks are due to tumbler expert Bob Smith of Boston, USA and to John & Margaret McGrath of Australia for their expertise in identifying, naming and cataloguing Carnival Glass made in India.

The home of glassmaking in India is Uttar Pradesh, in or near the city of Firozabad. It is known that the production of Carnival by the Jain Glass Works (one of the main glassmakers) started in 1935, but information on Indian glassworks is generally scanty, with a lack of historical documentation, making attribution of Indian Carnival difficult. Fortunately some pieces are marked: Jain (“JAIN”), Paliwal Glass Works (“PGW”) and Agrawal Glass Works (“AGW”) marked some, but not all of their production.

Mostly, Indian Carnival is marigold – varying from a very pale marigold to a deep pumpkin colour. Some Jain pieces were made in a light blue/aqua colour called Jain Blue. On some tumblers, the designs are etched rather than moulded, such as Canary Tree.
